You must request a Letter of Accommodation before you can request notes for your course. Please visit the Online Accommodation Letter Portal here. |
Welcome To Volunteer Peer Note-Sharing Services
You have been approved by your accessibility counsellor to use the Volunteer Peer Note-Sharing Service
PLEASE NOTE:
Please note that our service is a volunteer "note-sharing" platform, not a note-taking service. We use the term "note-sharer" to refer to the volunteer who shares their notes with others, but they are not paid professionals. It's important to understand that the availability of volunteers from your class may vary, and we cannot guarantee that someone will be able to share their notes with you. If there are no volunteers from within your class, we recommend exploring other options for obtaining notes.
Registering Your Courses:
- Request your Letter of Accommodation for the courses you are requesting notes from the Online Accommodation Letter Portal if you haven't already done so.
- Click on Courses/Notes.
- Log in using your Passport York account.
- Choose the classes you will require a volunteer peer note-sharer.
- There will be no “sample” notes available, this is a tab we do not use.
Choosing a peer volunteer:
- Under the tab “note-sharer availability”, choose a note-sharer.
- To maintain anonymity, note-sharers are identified by a number, not their name.
- Once you have selected a volunteer note-sharer, you will not need to change or switch to another note-sharer as you will have access to all notes that are uploaded to the database by any peer volunteer. The message on the website says, "contact if you need to switch note-takers", unfortunately, we cannot modify the wording since it is pre-programmed.
Important Information:
- Please note that 30 days after the last day of classes, you will no longer have access to your course notes shared by the volunteers. You must have all your notes downloaded before that time.
- While there may be note-sharers available, it's important to keep in mind that availability does not guarantee note-sharing. There is always a possibility that the person you select may have dropped the course or changed their mind about sharing their notes, even after committing to do so.
- It will take 24-48 hours for your courses to appear on the volunteer website once you have been referred to the note-sharing service.
- Note-sharers are peers from within your class, not professional note-takers.
- Note-sharer’s notes are meant to supplement your notes, not replace your notes.
- If you do not see notes on the system that means, there are no notes uploaded to the volunteer portal.
- We have no control over when a volunteer peer will upload their notes – we suggest they upload after each class, however, cannot guarantee this will happen.
- If you audit a course, you will not be able to request a volunteer note-sharer in the class.
- Contact notesharing@yorku.ca if you have any questions about the note-sharing service.
The courses listed below are exempt from being submitted for note-sharing services:
- American Sign Language
- PKIN’s
- Photography courses
- Dance classes
- Performance classes, i.e., theatre
- Ensemble classes
- Practicum placements
- Thesis Courses
- LLS course
Once you have submitted a request, make sure to check the site weekly. It is your responsibility to assign a note-sharer should one become available.

The goal of providing note-sharing support is to accommodate the student’s need to access classroom information provided in their courses.
Welcome To The Dean's Scribe Program
You have been approved by your accessibility counsellor to use The Dean's Scribe Program.
PLEASE NOTE
You will see the word “note taker” used in numerous places on the website, please be aware that this is a “note sharing” service, not a note taking service.
The person uploading notes is not a paid note taker, they are a peer volunteer from within your class and they are "sharing" their notes.
There is no guarantee that we will be able to secure a volunteer from within your class and we suggest you seek other options of securing notes if nobody is willing to share their notes.
Registering Your Courses:
- Click on Courses/Notes.
- Log in using your Passport York account.
- Choose the classes you will require a volunteer peer note sharer in.
- There will be no “sample” notes available, this is a tab we do not use.
Choosing a volunteer peer:
- Under the tab “note sharer availability”, choose a note sharer.
- Note sharers are identified by a number not their name to maintain their anonymity.
- Once you choose a volunteer note sharer, you DO NOT have to switch or change your note sharer. The website says, "contact if you need to switch note takers". This message is built in and we are unable to make any changes to the wording. You will have access to all notes that are uploaded to the database by any peer volunteer.
**PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO sample notes uploaded by peer volunteers!
Important Information:
- It will take 24 hours for your courses to appear once you have been referred to the note sharing service.
- Note sharers are peers from within your class.
- Note sharers are not a substitute for attending your lectures.
- If you don’t see notes on the system that means, there are no notes uploaded.
Once you have submitted a request, make sure to check the site weekly and assign a volunteer peer should one become available.
